Using Cell Phones in the Classroom–Don’t Do it!

Hi LawRiot,

I just began law school this year. I too am a 1L.

Let me begin by saying that I am addicted to my blackberry. I can’t live without it. It’s how I communicate with others and stay current. I know I shouldn’t, but I often text while in class. Therein lies the problem.

It’s not that hard when you have a 17-inch macbook because the prof can’t see your hands. However, I usually leave my cell on vibrate as then no one can tell that I’m getting texts from my boyfriend or anyone else. This one day in Real Property, I left to go to the bathroom and my study buddy thought she’d play a prank on me and turn up the volume on my cell while I was gone.

When I returned from the bathroom, I saw that I had 4 new text messages and 71 pairs of eyes staring at me. One pair of those eyes was the prof’s. Apparently, my cell phone rang each time a new text message came in. Little did my friend know, but my text message sound was set to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”. My study buddy and I still talk, but I’ve since changed my text message ringtone to the standard “ding” sound.

Law School is a Riot.
