Top 10 First Year (1L) Law School Tips

  1. Don’t fall behind in your work. You might catch up in theory, but in reality, your still weeks behind.
  2. Buy supplements. Professors will tell you not to but its beneficial.
  3. Don’t JUST read your supplements. Supplements are intended for exactly what they are called, to supplement your reading.
  4. Try not to get involved with the drama that is law school. You will, no matter how hard you try, but don’t let it run your life.
  5. Find out who your Teaching Assistants (TA’s) are for each class, meet them, be nice to them, and use them. They are there to help you and can. They have taken each class you’re taking and did very well.
  6. Find out EXACTLY how your professor would like you to write your exam. This includes: Headings, style, bolding, underlining, the use of “supras”, including cases and facts.
  7. Write your exams EXACTLY how your professor told you to write it. They aren’t playing a joke on you and no matter how much you’ve convinced yourself that you can write their exam better than they said, you can’t.
  8. Try and stay off facebook, myspace, twitter, espn.com, and any other gaming site while in class. This is for two reasons:
    1. You should be paying attention and taking notes. What your professor is saying, is actually important and the more you hit the small unique important points the professor hit in class, the more points you’re going to get on an exam.
    2. Everyone else in class can see your computer screen. Therefore, when you get called on and have no idea what the professor was talking about, or what the answer is, everyone is going to know why. Also, no one wants to watch you play two hours and fifty minutes of wheel of fortune.
  9. Take practice exams and read the sample answers the professor provided. Do all this under the time constraints provided in the practice exam. This is the best indicator as to where you are in relation to being prepared for the exam. It’s all about practice. Everyone, well most everyone, is going to know the rules, so the key is to know how to apply the rules to the fact pattern and do it quickly and proficiently.
  10. Have a life outside law school. Its time consuming and it’s stressful and there’s a lot to do. However, there is still time for life outside law school and it’s important. Find a hobby if you don’t have one and stick to it. Life is about balance and it’s no different for law school.

Good Luck!

My tip from personal experience in law school: If you chose to leave out your criminal record on your law school application, do not then amend your application after starting classes. This can (and in my case did) result in expulsion from the school and a loss of $15k in tuition. After committing one “unethical” act it is best not to attempt to grow a conscience.

Thanks for this article. I’m starting law school soon and will benefit a lot from your advice. Btw, should I get a PC or a Mac?
