ESPN.com released an article that will get even the most negative of prospective and/or current law students psyched about the prospects of becoming a lawyer.
The article begins by pointing out the obvious about athletes, coaches, managers, athletic trainers and the like; they retire and get fired. Now comes the genius in the whole story: behind every athlete, behind every contract and behind every numerous criminal or potential criminal act, there is a lawyer. This is like music to my ears as a current law student. This is a legitimate article, make a valid point, in an industry that everyone wants to get into.
Superstars like Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and Michael Vick all have/had attorneys that made out handsomely due to their clients misfortunes. Even universities such as Auburn had to retain counsel during the Cecil/Cam Newton scandal as Patrick Hruby wrote for ESPN.
For every professional athlete, coach, manager, owner and even University, there is a lawyer. This means there is a potential job and potential income, large amounts of income for lawyers. So in a job market that is terrible to be nice, there is potential, there is income, there is hope.
